The competition between PS5 and Xbox Series X comes alive
You are watching: < font style = "vertical-align: inherit;"> ps5 vs xbox série x
Xbox Series X vs < span> PS5 : this comparison could be of help to those who have not yet decided which console to take. This should not be surprising, first of all because to date it has been quite difficult to find one, but also because there is probably a slice of users who preferred to stay on the previous generation waiting for a price drop (which is quite unlikely given the situation ) or to be in a position to make the purchase.
In terms of pure comparison, the two Consoles of the current generation are both very powerful and offer features and performance that bring them quite close to the PC gaming world. Between resolutions up to 4K, frame rates that can exceed 60 fps and the latest graphics technologies such as Ray Tracing, DLSS and FSR , both consoles defend themselves very well in terms of performance, while the “clash”, if desired, seems to shift more on the stock of titles and the additional features offered by Microsoft and Sony services.
One thing that unites both consoles is the difficulty of availability. Today buying Xbox Series X in Italy or ordering a PS5 is quite complicated, due to the shortage of stock, so if you are still looking for a next-gen console and maybe you are still wondering which one to choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X, this guide has been designed for you.
In any case, we have avoided making a definitive judgment: each of us has his preferences, and also in the comparison between Xbox Series X and PS5 there are elements that cannot be judged absolutely.
The two consoles are excellent, from a technical point of view, with interesting innovations both on the controllers and for the general functionalities, as we had the opportunity to talk to you in the review, but so which one to choose? (Of course, always assuming you can find one at the moment).
Speaking of Xbox Series X vs PS5 (and their digital versions), there are many factors to consider. The new generation is, in fact, all centered around speed and graphic effects: in this sense there is not a great gap between the two consoles, even if Microsoft seems to have, at least on paper, a slight advantage. P >
As we said, at the moment it is quite difficult to get one of the two consoles, between the looting that plagued PS5 and the insufficient number of Xbox units distributed on commercial channels. There has been some improvement – for example getting an Xbox Series S isn’t a problem – but it’s still not that easy to get an Xbox Series X or a PS5. Unfortunately.
In this new generation, the two manufacturers wanted to differentiate themselves not only in the design of the new consoles but also in the approach to the next-gen. Microsoft, for its part, is betting on a couple of exclusive Xbox Series X games , focusing primarily on services such as Xbox Game Pass and cross-gen functionality.
Microsoft has decided to focus even more on gaming services, offering its users the opportunity to purchase an Xbox Series X or Series S console at installments, along with 24 months of Game Pass Ultimate < / span>, via the Xbox All Pass service. Furthermore, with the acquisition of Zenimax / Bethesda first and Activision / Blizzard then, not to mention the appointment of Phil Spencer as CEO of Microsoft Gaming , the Redmond giant seems to want to go all-in in the video game industry. If the upcoming Call of Duty and the Doom and The Elder Scrolls series titles take precedence over Xbox , Microsoft could be in a position of clear advantage over its all-time rival. A first result was collected, however: in fact, the Game Pass has reached the record quota of 25 million subscribers.
The fact that Microsoft focuses heavily on the concept of service is further validated, at the hypothesis level, from the possible arrival of a streaming device that the company would be developing to allow users to play with the Game Pass library even if they do not have a console.
And how will Sony react to this new strategy? It is difficult to imagine that the company does not decide to have its own Game Pass , but at the moment it seems to want to continue its policy based on first-party titles that will be able to exploit the full potential not only of PS5 but also the innovative features of the DualSense controller. However, the Spartacus project seems to want to reshuffle the cards, it remains to be seen how and when it will implement it.
Not sure which next-gen console to choose? Here’s everything you need to know about the PS5 vs Xbox Series X comparison.
PS: We just posted an interesting reflection PS5 vs. Xbox Series X, this is just an opinion but it could help you decide which of the two consoles is more for you. You can read it here .

When it comes to the technical specifications of the next generation consoles, both Sony and Microsoft have opted for very similar hardware components, albeit with a different focus.
PlayStation 5 features a third generation AMD Ryzen custom chipset with 8 cores embedded in the new Zen 2 architecture and Navi graphics processor. The CPU will have a speed of 3.5 GHz, while the graphics processor offers 36 computational units at 2.23 GHz with a power of 10.28 TFLOPS. To these hardware components is added a 16 GB GDDR6 memory with a bandwidth of 448 GB / s. This hardware architecture is able to support ray tracing , which is a technique for lighting effects with a great impact on performance and until now reserved for top-of-the-range graphics cards. Even in the case of the Sony console this type of ray tracing will be managed at the hardware level.
Sony has also promised that PS5 will introduce new standards in terms of immersion and 3D audio, especially with the use of headphones. although to take full advantage of the hardware, the new official headphones for PS5 will probably be needed. In fact, Sony will introduce the proprietary Tempest Engine which can handle hundreds of sound objects to give greater realism. Furthermore, some patents that appeared last year showed a particularly efficient cooling system to manage such power and which could have contributed to the unique appearance of the console.
PS5 is capable of achieving 4K resolution, a standard higher than the 1080p still supported by most TVs, and it also works with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Although on high-end PCs these standards are now widespread, the case of consoles is different: they are in fact unprecedented performances for home platforms. Better not expect, therefore, that in the early days all games will be able to catch up with them (also considering the spread of expensive TVs that can keep up).
On the hardware level, the most PS5’s interesting feature is its SSD . Again this is a custom component that offers up to 825GB of storage with a bandwidth of up to 5.5GB / s which can reach 9GB / s with compressed data.
Sony recently released a demo to show performance in PS5 games in a gameplay video of Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. In the video, the duo of the Insomniac series switches from one setting to another almost in real time and without any delay in loading polygonal models or streaming textures, something that would be impossible to achieve on PlayStation 4.
Even before the design of the console, Sony had presented the new controller that no longer belongs to the DualShock family but is called DualSense .
From the point of view of the features DualSense offers feedback haptic, which replaces the DualShock vibration implemented up to the fourth and last model. By translating the physics of certain on-screen elements (such as ground resistance in racing games) by touch, the controller promises to improve feedback and immersion.
Sony also explained that an adaptive feature has been “Implemented in the triggers of the pad, or L2 and R2” and that this feature allows you to simulate the actions in the game in a more precise way.
The pad retains the headphone jack and also has an integrated microphone to communicate more easily via chat with other players.
With all these new features, it’s no surprise that Sony has confirmed that the DualShock 4 controller doesn’t work with titles for PS5. The current controller, on the other hand, continues to be supported in backward compatible PlayStation 4 titles.
Microsoft, for its part, has assured that Xbox Series X is compatible with all controllers. the Xbox generations.
The DualSense had anticipated the design of the PS5, which was only shown a couple of months later. Both devices have a retro-futuristic look with a black and white color scheme. PS5 is undoubtedly a console that, just like the controller, leaves no one indifferent.
Some observers have expressed doubts about the size of the console and the controller. And indeed, the PS5 is particularly bulky.
Regarding the pad, it proved to be well proportioned even if at first it was feared that it could be mammoth.

On the Microsoft side, Xbox Series X has really impressive specs .
Even the console from the Redmond house is equipped with a custom AMD processor with the same Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures present on PS5, which makes it four times higher than the Xbox One X, which is the most powerful console of the current generation.
The Xbox Series X GPU boasts a power of 12 teraflops with 3,328 shaders allocated on 52 computational units. The graphics processor runs at a locked frequency of 1.825 GHz and, unlike other GPUs, does not have a variable speed. The clock speed remains the same regardless of the temperature and the amount of resources required by the games.
The processor is a custom AMD Zen 2 with eight cores and 16 threads. Interestingly, the hardware architecture gives developers the ability to disable simultaneous multithreading (SMT) to reach peak speeds of up to 3.8 GHz or a base speed of 3.6 GHz when enabled.
Xbox Series X has a resolution of 4K and supports the refresh rate of 120 Hz. The Microsoft console also competes with the PS5 in hardware ray tracing and is equipped with an NVMe SSD (space can be increased thanks to memory cards with proprietary format) that can be used as virtual RAM to increase loading speed by 40 times. The standard RAM is 16GB GDDR6, a much higher value than Xbox One X’s 12GB GDDR5. These specs are slightly above PS5’s in terms of raw power but it remains to be seen how these are. They will then translate into in-game performance once true next-gen titles arrive.
With Xbox Series X Microsoft aims to make latency a thing of the past with features like Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), improved controller response and support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) which takes advantage of the HDMI 2.1 standard of televisions.
The new Xbox is also backwards compatible with Xbox One accessories and that means you don’t necessarily need to buy a new controller or new headset. The Xbox Series X controller also includes some new features such as a button to share content and has a texture on the surface of the backbones and triggers.
Microsoft also explained that the games already available on Xbox One such as Gears 5 can harness the power of the new console. If you prefer to have games on disc, you can take advantage of the optical player and therefore, like PS5, even Xbox Series X allows you to play Blu-ray UHD in 4K .
Microsoft < span> has already shown some of the new features of the Xbox Series X at its February 2020 event. These include Smart Delivery , which allows you to purchase a single version of the game that you can use in an optimized version on both Xbox One and next-gen consoles. You can, for example, purchase Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox One upon release, confident that after a few months it will work in a better version on Series X at no additional cost.
Some publishers , like 2K, seem to want to raise prices for cross-gen titles and others like Activision have already confirmed that the cross-gen version of titles like COD: Cold War will cost € 10 more. Should this become a new standard, next-gen could prove to be significantly more expensive (and, in some ways, confusing) than the current one, but Microsoft is lobbying developers to introduce these graphics updates without additional costs. It remains to be seen if the Redmond house will really be able to convince them, even if there are already developers like Ubisoft who have decided to keep the same prices even for the cross-gen versions.
Then there is the functionality Quick Resume, which allows you to resume any game from where it left off without having to wait for long loading screens. The console also offers Variable Rate Shading (VRS) which allows you to “give priority in terms of graphic resources to certain characters or objects of the environment at the center of the scene”.
Features such as Quick Resume do part of what Microsoft called Velocity Architecture.
In an article that appeared on the Xbox Wire post, Microsoft listed the four pillars on which this architecture is based: Custom NVMe SSD, Hardware Accelerated Decompression, New DirectStorage API and Sampler Feedback Streaming.
All these elements combined allow the Xbox Series X to have performance that goes beyond simple technical specifications, potentially eliminating loading times, reducing the size of games and allowing you to create worlds much larger and immersive.
Furthermore, there may be less immediate differences between the two consoles, but in the long run they could further distance them in terms of performance.
An analysis by the technical magazine Digital Foundry has highlighted how PS5 uses the Primitive Shaders of AMD’s RDNA 1 architecture presented about a year and a half ago and then shown by Sony also during the official presentations . Xbox Series X, on the other hand, would take advantage of RDNA 2’s Mesh Shaders.
PS5 also would not have some features dedicated to machine learning such as INT8 / INT4 instructions, unlike Xbox Series X. Obviously these are not absences that, in the immediate future, can have an obvious impact but machine learning and artificial intelligence may have an implementation on consoles in the future, particularly for graphical improvements, and this could prove to be a disadvantage for PS5 compared to Xbox Series X.

It is worth pointing out that Xbox Series X isn’t Microsoft’s only next-gen console to arrive in November. The digital-only version Xbox Series S represents the affordable and less powerful alternative to Series X at a price of € 299. Sony offers its digital-only version of PS5, but Series S has a completely different approach and could change the cards in the challenge for the next-gen.
If you are particularly attentive to the environment, know that Xbox Series X may not be the best choice in this regard. While Sony has stated that PS5 is more energy efficient than PS4, an analysis by Digital Foundry had speculated that Series X might require twice the power of Xbox One.
< p> Overall, the Xbox Series X appears to be the most powerful console on paper but the ease of game development needs to be taken into consideration. In an interview with the Vigiato website, Crytek rendering engineer Ali Salehi pointed out that developing on Series X is currently more complicated and this would make it more difficult to reach the theoretical 12 teraflops, while expressing the full potential of PS5 should be easier.
In any case, these specs make little sense until we can get our hands on the highly regarded next-gen games.
Xbox Series X vs PS5: games
In the last few months we have been able to get a general idea of the overall experience that games for Xbox Series X and PS5 will be able to deliver.
Microsoft had initially confirmed that Halo Infinite , aka Halo 6, would be one of the Xbox Series X launch titles but the game was postponed to an indefinite period of 2021. The series is extremely important to Microsoft, as the saga left the story open five years ago on a cliffhanger that will hopefully finally come to an end with Halo Infinite. It is therefore one of the main titles that will also arrive on Xbox Game Pass upon release, confirming, once again, that Microsoft wants to focus heavily on the subscription service. The first gameplay footage had, however, been received controversially with some criticisms on the graphic quality, which grew after the discovery that it was a version of the game for PC and not for Xbox Series X . < / p>
Along with Halo Infinite, we know that Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II will also be coming to Xbox Series X. In the meantime, we can already enjoy Assassin’s Creed Valhalla , the Viking-themed episode of the Ubisoft saga. A Xbox Series X games event also featured a number of third-party Xbox Series X games , including Vampire: the Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Dirt 5 and The Medium to be released on December 10.
The announcement of a Fable reboot has caused quite a stir. came during Microsoft’s July event , which also announced a new chapter in the Forza and Avowed racing series, the new RPG developed by Obsidian. As per tradition, Sony seems to have already won the game for the exclusives but Microsoft seems really willing to catch up.
Recently Microsoft also announced the acquisition of the holding company ZeniMax Media, owner of the id Software studios (Doom , Quake and Rage), Arkane Studios (Dishonored and Prey), MachineGames (Wolfenstein), Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within) and Bethesda Game Studios (The Elder Scrolls and Fallout) and ZeniMax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online). This move by Microsoft will not only ensure that the next titles arrive on the subscription service as of the release date but also to make the entire catalog of these studies available on Game Pass. Additionally, Microsoft has already stated that Bethesda games will take priority over Xbox Series X , although we don’t know if in terms of release timing, graphics quality or additional content.
Xbox Series X also offers backward compatibility with the game catalog of all previous consoles. If you have games for the first Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, they will most likely work on Series X as well, especially if they are part of the Xbox One library.
But that’s not all. Microsoft has long underlined its commitment to Xbox Series X cross-gen support to ensure that by purchasing a single version of the game it is available on both the current and next-gen consoles. . This does not mean that Series X will not have exclusives to convince players to buy but that the ecosystem of the console will have a closer approach to the consumer with the premium console that will be able to offer the highest quality possible.
The situation could obviously be different for third-party titles, as the development teams will decide whether to make a version optimized for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X. It is not difficult, however, to predict that in a couple of Microsoft Studios titles can turn into exclusives available only on Xbox Series X.
As for PS5 games , we currently know a couple of launch titles and others expected in the following months. Among the first to arrive will be Astro’s Playroom (pre-installed on the console) and Destiny 2 conversions: Beyond Light, Madden 21 and NBA 2K21.
At launch, PS5 was accompanied by Spider-Man : Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls with Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 likely to arrive next year. To these are added the next God of War, announced with a teaser, and Final Fantasy XVI which will be exclusively temporal for consoles on PS5.
In the meantime, the first properly next-gen titles are Returnal and Ratchet & amp; Clank: Rift Apart, two titles that are standing out among the best PS5 games available at the moment. Let’s not forget the excellent Resident Evil Village and Astro’s Playroom.
If you don’t care about the launch titles, Sony has assured that the console will be backwards compatible , but we still don’t know for sure how many and which PlayStation 4 titles will be available on PS5 upon release. What is certain is that, as confirmed by Sony itself, the next-gen console will not be backwards compatible with the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 catalogs. Sony also announced the new PlayStation Plus Collection offer. which will allow all subscribers to be able to play 18 of the best games released on PlayStation 4 such as God of War, Uncharted 4 and Bloodborne.
Among the purely current-gen titles, on the Playstation5 it is distinct Returnal, a game that focuses on atmosphere and challenge, with elements of roguelike and bullet hell. The title convinced almost everyone, net of some decisions perhaps too punitive towards the players.
In opposition to Microsoft’s cross-gen approach, Sony reiterated that it still believes in the generations of consoles and never misses an opportunity to underline the importance of next-gen exclusives for PS5. However, recently, it has given opposite signals with Spider-Man Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West which will also be available on PS4
Of course, streaming gaming is also at stake. With the entry of Google Stadia into the sector and the arrival of Amazon Luna , Microsoft and Sony have decided to focus more and more on subscription services. The results, especially in the case of Sony, however, are still to be understood.
The arrival of Project xCloud within the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at no additional cost has given the ability to play Game Pass titles on Xbox, PC and supported mobile devices. In addition, the EA Play service will soon be integrated within Ultimate, allowing access to over 60 games from the publisher such as The Sims, FIFA 20, Anthem, as well as various exclusive content.
Game Pass is a rather affordable service and the addition of Project xCloud makes it even more interesting for those who prefer to play on multiple platforms, and now the offer is enriched with Xbox All Access, which offers 24 months subscription and the console paid in 24 convenient installments. Sony’s offer with PSNow, in this sense, is destined to seem to be rather behind, considering that the PlayStation Plus Collection will also be introduced.
With the next-gen consoles, a considerable role will be played by the titles end-of-generation that will be able to run in an optimized version on PS5 and Xbox Series X. This means that the next-gen updated version of Cyberpunk 2077 , Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part 2 may still be good incentives for buying a console.
Xbox Series X vs PS5: the price
PS5 and Xbox Series X seem be in a real head to head. The standard versions of the two consoles are priced at € 499. The digital-only model of the PlayStation 5 costs € 399 instead.
One of the reasons for the success of the current Sony console was certainly its price of € 399 which gave it a starting advantage over the Xbox One which it cost € 100 more because of the Kinect. The Microsoft console, in fact, included the device that in the intentions of the company should have made a difference but which ended up proving to be not at all popular with gamers and was sacrificed on the altar of savings.
Sony knows a lot well what can be the consequences of an excessively high price after the experience of PlayStation 3 but the president of SIE Jim Ryan has always been reluctant to say explicitly that the price of PS5 would have made a difference in the challenge with Xbox Series X.
In reality, the real comparison between Sony and Microsoft will not be on the premium versions of the consoles but on the cheaper versions thanks to the extremely diverse offer of the two models. Series S is priced at € 299, while the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (without optical drive) costs € 399.99.
In any case, this is not a comparison in all respects. Microsoft’s digital-only console is in fact slightly less powerful with a maximum resolution of 1440p instead of 4K and a maximum refresh rate between 60 and 120 fps. The PS5 Digital Edition, on the other hand, has identical hardware to that of the standard edition but without the optical drive.
In terms of value for money, the Xbox Series S seems to win but clearly with a compromise: how for the PS5 in digital edition, in fact, it cannot read 4K Blu-ray discs. It therefore seems that, ultimately, the decision on which console to choose will be based more on brand loyalty and services in addition to the catalog of games that Sony and Microsoft intend to build.
We now know everything about both PS5 and Xbox Series X. The similarities are remarkable, but at the same time they are two consoles that are unique in their own way.
Both Sony and Microsoft are putting a lot of emphasis on SSD technology so that they can provide a somewhat developer-like environment. In addition, both companies are making a significant effort on backward compatibility. In this round it seems that Microsoft and Sony have listened to the opinion of the users but they are showing a very different approach in terms of next-gen exclusives and it will be interesting to see which strategy will prove to be successful.
Obviously, the competition between the two fanbases must be taken into consideration and therefore exclusives will be even more important in the next generation of consoles. With so many possibilities to play, from on-demand titles to streaming, hardware could become less and less important and the experiences and games that the two brands Xbox and PlayStation are able to offer could make the difference.
Between Halo Infinite and Horizon Forbidden West, Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo and Fable, not to mention Returnal and the fantastic Psychonauts 2: the strong exclusives seem to be already on the table. An even more fierce battle between the two consoles is therefore expected.
Of course, the scarce availability of consoles, especially PS5, persists, and with Xbox All Access, Microsoft seems to want to take a new advantage over its rival Sony. < / p>
It remains to be seen how the global availability situation will evolve.
